Sound Advice: Encyclopedia Of Voice-Over

A Product Review by Julie Williams

sound_adviceI acquired the Sound Advice Encyclopedia of Voice-Over during a recent trip to Los Angeles to network with dozens of industry professionals. I began reading the book on the way home. I was blown away. After all… in my 37 years as a professional VO talent, what could this book teach ME? How arrogant! We ALL have something to learn from other industry professionals with decades of experience in this industry—because their experiences over the decades was different from ours!  Why just settle for the lessons I’ve learned…when I can glean the benefits of their knowledge as well?

Kate McClanaghan has put together the most comprehensive book on VO that I’ve ever read—and I’ve read a LOT of them! This encyclopedia is literally just short of 500 pages of gemstones to crown your career—at whatever level!  But fear not, beginners will understand every bit of it, and should use it to guide their careers.

Topics range from the purpose of a VO demo, to what to charge, to branding and advancing technology. Further topics include finding your commercial strengths, production, auditions, the most lucrative pay-to-play sites, post production, web sites, how to get an agent, how to get work, and how to promote your services.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Literally!  (Sorry for the cliche.)  The Sound Advice Encyclopedia of Voice-Over Third Edition (updated for 2014) teaches the A-Z of VO. I will definitely keep this in my library…and suggest that you—however long you’ve been in the industry—do the same. And for $36, it’s at a price point that any and every professional voice talent can afford!
