VoiceOver Success Doesn’t Happen by Accident

Success stair stepOne question Quiz.  Which is true?

a)     “You have all your fingers. You should be a concert pianist!”

b)     “You have a great voice. You should do voice-overs!”

c)     “You’ve got a very steady hand. You should be a brain surgeon!”

d)     None of the above

The answer, of course, is D.  But if you chose B, we are not mocking you. There is no shame in being misinformed. It is a common misconception that a person with a “good voice” will automatically succeed or be “discovered” in voice-over.

In reality, voice-over is not about the voice at all. It’s about the skill with which you present the “story” (the message) This is the most fundamental aspect of VO. Without skill you will not succeed no matter how good your voice is. Period.

Getting Discovered Doesn’t Happen by Accident.

I’m tempted to say that people don’t get “discovered” in voice-over (with the exception of a certain homeless man a few years ago, but that’s a different story.) You actually CAN get discovered –but it doesn’t happen by accident! Casting professionals love to discover new talent. It makes their job easier. But discovery is not the stuff of fairy tales. It occurs through a strategic and purposeful marketing campaign. Want to get discovered?

  • Have the talent/skills to back up your claims
    • If you don’t have the skills yet, email me at [email protected] and I’ll refer you to a coach that specializes in the genre(s) you want to excel in.
  • Realize that success happens behind the scenes, not just behind the mic.
    • Create a vision statement (more on this later)
    • Strategize a plan to succeed in
      • Behind the scenes operations
      • Networking (It’s not who you know… it’s who knows you!)
      • Marketing planning

“If You Build it They Will Come”

That’s true in the movies, but in voice-overs, it’s not enough.  If you build it…and you develop it…and you organize it… you strategize and plan it…you implement your plan (including networking and marketing promotions)… and you do it right… they’ll probably come!

No Fortune 500 company just opens its door to see stock values soar. Their success was planned at many levels.  Here’s a process that you may see at one of the top companies in America.

  • Boards of Directors talk about their visions for the company.
  • CEO’s set goals—benchmarks—that will lead to achieving the vision
  • Upper management strategizes plans & processes to meet the goals
  • Department heads delegate tasks result in achievements the contribute toward the ultimate goals

In the final analysis, everyone from the top down to the person with the most menial job works synergistically to realize the company’s ultimate vision.  It can be a complicated process.  But fortunately, with voice-over, the process is much simpler.  The point is, Success Doesn’t Happen by Accident.
