Faffcon 7: Another Successful VO UNconference

By Derek Chappell

Derek Chappell_7 - thumbnailIs my Faffterglow still showing? A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the annual voiceover Unconference, Faffcon 7, at the beautiful Westward Look Wyndham Resort and Spa, in Tucson, Arizona. It was my first return to Faffcon since Faff 2 in Atlanta in 2011, and needless to say, I was NOT disappointed about my return.

For those of you not familiar with Faffcon, it is the only conference for working VO professionals whose content is 100% created by and for the participants. A working retreat of sorts in which various VO topics are explored in peer-led groups…an UNconference. The objective and guiding principle behind FaffCon is very simple: “Get What You Need, Share What You Can.”

The Westward Look Wyndham Resort and Spa

The 100 voice actors, narrators, and voice talent gathered in the desert, amongst the cactus, mountains and abundant sunshine to share ideas, trends, concerns and advice about their voiceover skills and businesses. Topics discussed in the numerous breakout sessions included everything from audiobooks to e-learning, home-studio’s to marketing, time management to animation, and much more.

The sessions took place as open, roundtable discussions, with many more ‘informal’ sessions taking place at all times of day and night in the lobby, around the bar, in the pool, and in any other area of the beautifully accommodating resort, with the 9,000-foot Mount Lemon mountain range always in the background.

This year’s adopted charity, The Children’s Learning Center, in Tucson, was the beneficiary of the giving nature of the Faffers that attended, who generously donated $5,500 to their efforts in providing education and assistance to children who suffer from disabilities and inability to effectively communicate with others. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Faffcon founder, Amy Snively, and everybody’s favorite VO talent, Bob Souer, presented the check to the director of the Learning Center.
