The Biggest Mistake VO Newbies Make

owl_julieSo many voiceover newbies make the mistake of not approaching voiceover as a business.

Like a Subway Franchise, there are expenses: studio, training, marketing. You need a coach to guide you  (not just teach you…but guide you) in what to do next). And, you need to be prepared to invest in yourself, your training, your skills, and your equipment. If someone isn’t able to afford to make the investment,  they’re not in a position to buy a Subway Franchise…or to start a VO business.

It’s cheaper than ever to get into voiceover. BUT… it still requires an investment in money, time, and perseverance.

So the first questions to ask yourself are:
•  How badly to I want it?
•  Are my goals/dreams realistic?
•  Can I afford to do this? And how can I afford to do this?

Then realize that VO is a SKILL, not a natural talent. (Although some are naturals at it.) So if you’re depending on your VOICE to be “discovered,” don’t hold your breath.

If you’re willing to train, realizing that advanced education takes time and money (it takes less than college!) then go for it! I’ll do anything I can do advise you on a trainer and demo producer  (either me or others, depending on what you want to learn—commercials, cartoons, etc.)  and to help you avoid losing thousands of dollars to scam artists or incompetents.

BTW… stay tuned…we’ll announce a new podcast, soon, on this very topic as I talk with a Los Angeles agent and get his take on it. So be sure to click SUBSCRIBE in the upper right hand corner of the home page, if you haven’t already, so we can get you word when that podcast is available!
